Call for papers Applied Geomatics

SPECIAL ISSUE "GEOMATICS AND RESTORATION"

Dear Colleagues,

Geomatics and Restoration are both complementary disciplines in the field of Cultural Heritage (CH), because they are consecutive steps in the process of conservation, safeguarding and enhancement of CH.

Presently this relative complementarity finds new reasons in the notable development of geomatics technologies applied to the documentation of historical objects, monuments and sites. Range-based and image-based technologies, either terrestrial or with aerial platforms such as drones/RPAS/UAS/UAV, with laser scanning and/or photogrammetric solutions, without forgetting GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and HBIM (Historic Building Information Modelling) technologies, they all enhance the work on CH from surveying to data management and the design of future interventions.

Starting from the main output coming from all the technologies – in the form of 3D point clouds and models - a myriad of new representations are offered for planning and analysis of conservation projects, and for disseminating information about heritage sites as well as new related problems.

The contributing authors are invited to submit versions of their papers to Applied Geomatics - the official journal of the Italian Society of Photogrammetry and Topography (SIFET) (ISSN: 1866-9298/1866-928X) for publication in a Special Issue. The call is open to all colleagues interested in taking a step forward to cross over the anachronistic disciplinary boundaries and to establish a constructive dialogue between Geomatics and Restoration.

Topics

This Special Issue on Geomatics and Restoration will provide the scientific community a dedicated forum, within the prestigious Springer Journal of Applied Geomatics, for discussing about (but not limited to) the need of reliable metric 3D digital models, how to limit improper use of the technologies and the spread of non-verifiable models, the research of a common and shared language between the different disciplinary sectors involved and, finally, the role of the education in the spread of such concepts.

The topics covered by this Special Issue are related to the following themes:

  • Risk and Resilience;
  • The use of digital images in visible and not-visible ranges;
  • Thematic data documenting pathologies, materials, decay, as well as data georeferencing;
  • HBIM for management and maintenance - relationship between recording and design processing;
  • Documentation of Monumental Complexes;
  • Digital and physical replicas – augmented reality, virtual restoration;
  • Education and Communication.
