Abstract

This article is a direct result of the experience gained during the organization of the first NASA World Wind Europa Challenge, which ended with the final presentation of the projects at the "INSPIRE 2013: The Green Renaissance", held in Florence at the end of June 2013.

In this article we will make a brief introduction of the Virtual Globes, then we will move to illustrate the main Open Source projects active in this field. Particular attention will be dedicate to the virtual globe used for this challenge, NASA World Wind, and to the projects that participated.

SIFET supported this challenge (Figure 10), contributing to its implementation and providing the award for the best university project.
